Overview
Embarking on the 5-day Mount Kenya Chogoria Route up and down Sirimon Route promises an unforgettable adventure through diverse landscapes and challenging terrains. Beginning at the Sirimon Gate, trekkers ascend through lush montane forests, encountering an array of wildlife and endemic flora along the way. As the route progresses, the landscape transitions into moorlands, with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding peaks. Crossing the scenic Gorges Valley, adventurers eventually reach the high altitude desert before ascending to the Lenana Peak, the third-highest point on Mount Kenya. Descending via the Chogoria Route, the journey offers a contrasting perspective of the mountain, with its rugged cliffs and alpine vegetation, before concluding back at the Chogoria Gate. This expedition offers not only physical challenges but also a profound connection with the natural beauty and ecological diversity of Mount Kenya.
Day 1:
You will have a drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town for lunch after which you will take a 4*4 vehicle to
drive up where you will start your Mount Kenya hike via the bamboo forest. The vehicle helps in cutting
most of the lower ground. You will walk for 3 hours to the Meru Mt Kenya Bandas for dinner and an
overnight stay gaining a 680m ascent. Accommodation: Budget camping
Day 2:
The journey up the mountain begins after breakfast. You will have an option of using the route via Lake
Ellis though you will walk a little longer, the sight of the Mugi hill, Ithanguni and they are worth every
extra mile. Also, you can choose to climb Mount Kenya by following the path near the river, all is not lost
there is plenty of vegetation and wildlife to enjoy. Then you will pause your Mount Kenya hike for lunch
and rest then continue left of the hill where you will have dinner and pitch a tent for the night.

Day 3:
After breakfast, you will continue your journey up the highest mountain in Kenya re-joining the normal
Chogoria route. It is about a 4-hour hike to our next camp. The Gorges Valley offers the best views of the
peaks and when you turn behind the Mugi hills and the Giants Billiards Table are amazing. Close by the
Minto’s camp is the temple with a spectacular view of Lake Michaelson beneath it. You will have dinner
and a good night's rest after a full day of climbing Mount Kenya. Accommodation: Budget camping.
Day 4:
This is a busy day. You will start hiking Mount Kenya at 3:00 a.m. in order to enjoy sunrise at the peak of
Point Lenana. After that rewarding Mount Kenya hiking experience, you will descend to the Shimpton’s
camp for breakfast and continue further to old Moses where you will spend the night. The Mount Kenya
descent via the Sirimon route is gradual and exciting as you enjoy the flora and fauna through
Mackinder’s valley. You will spend 11-12 hours walking down the highest mountain in Kenya.

Day 5:
Old Moses Camp – Nairobi- 2 hrs
You will have a much-needed rest and breakfast in the morning. Then, you will descend to the foot of
Mount Kenya at Sirimon Park gate for about 2-3 hours to catch a vehicle for a drive back to Nairobi. You
will arrive late afternoon.
